Hello Families,

We have a busy final week ahead! Everyone is getting excited for the break, teachers included :)!

Here are some important things happening this week:

Library
All books were due back to the library today as our school librarian has to count all of the books over the break. If you have a book at home please send it back with your child as soon as possible to avoid charges.

Food Bank
Tomorrow will be our final day to accept food bank donations for our tower. Currently it is standing at just over 3 feet tall. If you would like to contribute please send your items tomorrow.

Christmas Carols
On Thursday, December 20th at 12:30pm and Friday, December 21st at 11:20pm the whole school will be getting together to sing Christmas carols. Parents, guests, and siblings are welcome to attend the caroling events. The singing will be for approximately 30 minutes.

December 21st
On December 21st, everyone is invited to wear festive sweaters! Also, a reminder that it is early dismissal at 12:15pm. We will be having an in class celebration that morning before the carols.

Take care!

December 10, 2018

Hello Families,

Today we started to look at different ways to count. We used chart paper and big markers instead of our Montessori mats today to count objects in our classroom, using different strategies such as counting all, counting on from a number we know, and skip counting. We also thought about the most efficient ways to count big groups of objects, and made estimates before counting.

We also shared about the weekend, and completed our journal entries. It is awesome to see how much the writing is improving since the beginning of the year. Students are being challenged to add more content to their text, as well as considering things like capital and lowercase letters, and appropriate punctuation placements.

The LBS Concert Tickets will be sent home today with the oldest child in your family at our school. If you are not attending the evening show, please send your tickets back as soon as possible so they can be given to another family. If you require more than 2 tickets please contact the office.

Recently, we have had an increase in the amount of toys, cards, stuffed animals, etc. coming with students to school. They can be distracting for learning, and can easily be lost or taken. Please ensure your child is not bringing any toys to school unless it is an earned reward, in which case I will communicate with all students and post in my blog.

Also, we are still hoping for food bank donations!! If you have any please send them in so we can start building and measuring our tower! :)

I hope you enjoyed the weekend!

Stuffy/Toy Day

Hello Families,

We earned a reward for all of our Dojo Points last week. Today, the students decided they would like to have a stuffy/toy day tomorrow. Each student can bring one favorite stuffed animal or toy with them to have in the classroom. Please remember that weapon toys and electronics are not welcome at school.

Thanks!

Hello Families,

We had a fantastic experience at Nickle Junior High School on Monday morning! The walk was long and a little tiring trekking through all of the deep, fresh snow, but the learning opportunities made it worth the walk, even for the little legs!

First, our grade 8 buddies took us on a tour of their school. This was really interesting, as we noticed many things in their environment that are very different from ours at Lake Bonavista School. Some of the most notable things included a foods and fashions room, staircases, lockers, a huge gym where the students were running a beep test, and a woodworking shop! We also noticed some things that were the same or only slightly different, such as the staff room, learning commons, and recycling bins. This allowed us to build on our understanding of a school community!

After the tour, our buddies had books written for us about our interests. The big buddies read us their stories and gave us the chance to make changes, revisions and edits where they were needed. We also helped them with the illustrations to go with the stories. On our next visit, in January, they will have the good copies of our stories ready for us to keep!

This week we also started our exploration of number. Yesterday, we introduced number lines, and worked with putting numbers on the lines, then building them with the Montessori colored beads. For students that were successful, additional challenges were added such as skip counting by 2's and 5's using the number line as a reference. We also played the fun and simple game of "silent bunny", ask your child to teach you this one at home (bunny is optional, any soft ball shaped object would work well). We also got a brand new bead cabinet for our classroom, which is perfect timing to assist in our skip counting learning.

We also started a writing task about problem sizes, following the sentence structure, "A small problem is when I ..." . Students were encouraged to think of small, medium, and big problems that could actually happen at school. The next step will be building personalized, effective strategies for how to solve these problems. Tomorrow, our school Occupational Therapist is coming to give us a lesson on social stories, and eventually we will write our own social stories about problems we face.

As a whole school we are collecting donations for the Food Bank. Donations will be accepted until December 19th. As a fun inquiry, I thought it would be fun to build a tower with the donations in our class and then find different ways to measure (math curriculum) the donation tower! If you are able to support this cause, please send donations with your child so we can begin this work!

Take care,
Lindsay Brown
