Reading Rewards and Conferences

We announced our March laser tag reading winners today - Congratulations to Kai and Mina!!!

We had two giveaways this month as one was left over from before the program started (February). In upcoming months there will only be one winner. The reading rewards program will stop until school resumes in April, however, students are always encouraged to keep up their daily reading practice!

We had a fantastic first day of conferences, with lots of celebrations over all the hard work! Please know you are welcome to stay longer than your 30 minute time period. We have tons of fantastic learning on display in the hallways as well as the classroom, so make sure you have enough time to check out the hallway work as well.

Take care,
Lindsay Brown

Insulator Homework

Hi Families,

This week, students entered the final stages of our exploration into liquids, hot and cold temperatures by designing an insulator to keep a water bottle cold.

Each student drew a blueprint for their water bottle insulator, labeled the different materials they would need, and then reviewed it with me.

Our classroom has plenty of materials for joining/attaching (ie. tape, glue). All students are bringing home a materials list the require to construct their insulator today, it is on a brightly colored cue card. Items may include things like popsicle sticks, bubble wrap, grocery bags, Styrofoam, a single plastic container, etc. Most students have identified 2-4 materials.

Please have them bring their materials into school on Monday to start building. If possible, please send them in a bag clearly labeled with your child’s name.

There will be opportunities to reflect on the success of materials during the testing process, so please stay true to your child’s material list as they are applying their current learning and will benefit from the design thinking process provided in this activity. Please and thank you

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me.

Thank you.

March 11, 2019

Hello Families,

Today we started talking about Student Led Conferences, coming up on March 21 and 22. We have so much exciting work to share with you! Please be aware that the conference bookings open today at 5:00pm. I understand there has been some difficulty, therefore, the opening time could be delayed. School Messenger will keep you up to date on conference bookings.

Tomorrow is our last day of roller blading lessons. I can't believe the progress that has already been made in only a few sessions! Already students are much more efficient in getting their gear on and skating with ease. I even got to participate in the roller blading last time :)!

I am hoping to have a parent volunteer come in one morning or afternoon this week to take down some art and assist in making a display for conferences. If you have any availability please let me know via email! We can work around your schedule, thanks in advance!

Also a reminder that Scholastic orders are due on Friday, March 15th.

Take care,
Lindsay Brown

School Updates

Here's a message from our office:

Don’t miss out on school messages!

Most school messages are sent to parents through SchoolMessenger.  It’s a mass communication tool that allows us to easily and securely send email, phone and text messages to families of students in a particular grade, class, or area.  Messages are sent to the parent email contacts on file at the school.

To ensure you receive important information from our school and the Calgary Board of Education, we ask that you please Subscribe online (if you have not done so already).  This will allow us to send electronic messages on school topics such as student fees, picture days, field trips and fun lunches.

Visit the CBE website at www.cbe.ab.ca , click on the section called ‘Subscribe’, and subscribe today.

March 4, 2019

Hello Families,

I hope everyone enjoyed the weekend, thank you for sending helmets today! Alien Inline was a lot of fun! Today we had our first session and all students were successful and courageous with the roller blading lessons, despite several wipe outs. Luckily, we had a whole hour of instructional time! Just getting the knee and elbow pads, wrist guards, and blades on was very time consuming, haha :)

We have Alien Inline again on Wednesday, March 6th and Tuesday, March 12th. Please send helmets for these days as well. In addition, if there are any parent volunteers that would like to join us from 8:20am until about 8:50am on those days just to assist in helping students with roller blades it would really help to speed up the process. Let me know via email if you can assist!

Furthermore, because of Alien Inline in the gym, we will be having our physical education time outdoors (weather permitting) over the next two weeks. Please ensure your child is extra bundled on these days so we can enjoy our outdoor physical activity time!

Word work this week went home on an orange/yellow sheet for practicing. The words are varied again this week, with most lists focusing on different vowel sounds to build reading and writing confidence.

Last week we finished the rough copies of our social story work and created a bullseye rubric for success. We will begin out good copy writing this week, with the social stories and illustrations, as well as self assessments about the work ready to share at student led conferences. All of the social stories are written about small problems that happen at school, so should be relevant and helpful for all students! :)

Last week we also got to experience Code Mobile and Crazy Hair/Hat Day on the same day, SO FUN! The crazy hair and hats looked amazing!!!! Everyone went all out and it was such a fun day for everyone. Here are some of then pictures I took during Code Mobile of the students learning how to use the Scratch program to code.

We also have begun exploring liquids and hot and cold temperatures. With Ms. Thomas's class, we started talking about water and why it is important, this was a great refresher from our landform work.  We also taste tested water at various temperatures, and many students demonstrated a preference for the cool "ice water". As follow up, we used thermometers and tested water temperatures out of all the taps and water fountains in the school. We talked about letting the water "acclimate" by waiting one minute to get an accurate temperature read.

Today, we started to learn about weaving by creating our own weaving looms from paper plates. Tomorrow we will be able to start adding the color to our looms to create beautiful art!

Scholastic Orders will be due on Friday, March 15th!

Take care!
