Google Meet Expectations

 Google Meet Expectations

  • Enter meetings with your microphone off
  • Depending on the activity, videos do not always need to be on
  • Only turn on your microphone when it is your turn to talk to minimize background noise
  • Students should be the only person visible on the screen
  • Students should be in a quiet location where they are ready to learn (ie. not in bed or in a noisy space with siblings)
  • Students should be dressed appropriately (believe it or not this does have to be said- clothes are a must!)
  • Google Meet codes will always be the same and are included in the package sent home yesterday.

December 17, 2020

 Hello Families,

We had a wonderful last week of school! Everyone worked so hard to finish up their must do's before the holidays and we were able to celebrate today by making cards for our loved ones, watching some Christmas shows, and spending some extra time outdoors! I hope everyone has time to enjoy the holidays and has a very Merry Christmas! :)

Today, packages were sent home with students that will be required for home learning the week of January 4-8. The login information and schedule is on the front, please feel free to familiarize yourselves with this info and practice independence with the login routine. Keep the rest of the package closed until January 4th to ensure all contents stay safe!

The Pigeon stories for (almost all) student's are now accessible on Google Classroom for you to check out from home. I am so impressed with the quality and dedication throughout this work! It's hard to believe the work that can be done by such young kiddos.

Again, Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays!

Take care,

Ms. Brown

December 10, 2020

 Hello Families,

We have made it to the final week before Christmas break! I can't believe how quickly the year is going by! Despite excitement about the holidays, I am so impressed at how focused the students have been! We are going to start an exciting "Pigeon on the shelf" for the final days of school where the kids need to find Pigeon in his hiding spot each day.

This week we started learning about and writing our own math stories. This will be the foundational step to start talking about addition and subtraction. Here are some of the number stories students wrote today.

The Pigeon story books are coming along nicely! A friend and comic expert in our class taught us about the different kinds of speech bubbles yesterday. Also, we learned studied Pigeon's different expressions and body language from the stories we have read thus far and talked about how they show emotions. We practiced some illustrations with speech bubbles before adding them to our good copies. The ideas in the Pigeon stories have been so creative and unique! I am very impressed with the level of creativity and engagement in this work.

We also introduced a Santa Clause Problem. In a story we read, The 12 Sleighs of Christmas, Santa's sleigh got completely wrecked before his journey across the world to deliver presents. Today, we are learning about the different hemispheres and how that impacts seasonal change. Next, we will talk about Santa would need to adapt to the different hemispheres while in his sleigh (change clothing, wear sunscreen, etc). Students will need to help solve Santa's problem using what they know about seasonal changes and magnets to redesign a sleigh!

It was also a great week for recess excitement with the amazing snowman snow that arrived! Check out this amazing snow tower made by grade 1/2's that is taller than me!! Wow!

Take care everyone & best wishes during the holiday season!

December 3, 2020

 Hello Families,

Wow, it is hard to believe we have already entered December! What an year it has been, I hope everyone is still doing well despite an interesting and challenging year!

We had a super fun whole school PJ day today! Students have been working extra hard today, maybe we need to wear our PJ's everyday? haha!

The Pigeon adventure challenge from last weekend was a massive success! We started writing our Pigeon narratives this week in class and learned about "big fish hooks" to capture the attention of our audience with our writing. We used the analogy of wanting to have a juicy and exciting start our Pigeon narratives to "hook a big fish". The criteria we learned to include is details and descriptive language, an exciting event, and when the event took place. We provided feedback to our first drafts to improve our work, also! Here are some examples to the start of this work:

We also learned about pictographs as a new way to represent data. We used a parallel task from last week with recording dice rolls with tallies, however, instead of completing a bar graph to show our data, we used pictographs. Many students reported they feel more comfortable using pictographs than bar graphs at this point in time. Our next work is to collect and represent data about school T-shirts! Here are some pictures of the pictograph work:

This week we also learned about the difference between rights and responsibilities at school and represented this information using words and pictures. We read a story together about rights and responsibilities and then brainstormed a list as a whole class.

Only a few school days left until winter break! Please ensure you have logged on to google classroom before the break begins so you can be prepared for online learning in January.

Important Dates:

December 17 = Festive Sweater Day

December 18 = Winter Break begins for students!

Take care,

Ms. Brown
