 Hello Families,

It was an awesome week with the BE BRAVE Hitmen Hockey Game being a major highlight! About half of our class had never been to the Saddledome before so it a really fun and unique experience. Throughout the game they had lots of guest speakers talking about the importance of being an ally and standing up against bullying. Additionally, the concourse had lots of giveaways and freebies like photo booths, stickers, mascots, etc.

Before the game, we talked about what it means to debate a topic, and use convincing arguments to persuade your audience. We had a couple of mini debates in class to practice this thinking style. Our two questions were:

1. Should we always have 5 day weekends?

2. Should boo-ing be allowed in professional sports?

Students generated interesting and creative reasons to support their perspectives from both sides. Debating is also a great way to practice listening and responding to others when they have opinions that may differ from yours.

We are continuing to learn about fractions and place fractions on a number line by changing the numerator and using the denominator as a guide to create equal sections. As we move forward we will look at equivalent fractions.

We are also preparing to support Ms. Kassam and Mrs. Bouchard's classes with their sharing assembly in March as they are speaking to the Artist in Residence project we completed about celebrations in India, Tunisia, Ukraine, Peru, and Alberta. We look forward to sharing this work with you during March Conferences.

Ms. Mia our student teacher started on February 14th and will be joining us for 8 weeks, and eventually teaching 100% of the time. I will post an introduction from her next week.

Take care,

Ms. Brown

 Hello Families,

Here are some student highlights from this week:

Artist in Residence

Artist in residence was my favourite thing we did this week, we got to make flowers from the countries we are learning about with paper and tape, we will be adding paper mache and paint to make them look realistic - Sangeet

I made a vine for a lotus flower to be part of a celebration table in India - Claire

Light Lab

We are making predictions and testing materials to see if the light goes through. If all light passes through it's a transparent material, if some light goes through its translucent, and if no light passes through it is an opaque material. We tested these materials with natural and artificial light (flashlights) - Georgia and Ember

Fractions

I liked learning about fractions this week and I learned that a half and another half equals a whole. - Skylar

Snowshoeing

Seed Stories

The seed stories were fun to make and I liked adding detail and drawing the pictures. - Dani

The stories were really fun, I wrote mine about the obnoxious mango. - Loic

I liked coming up with beginning, middle and end for my seed story, my main character is the slippery sandwich and he gets bullied for being so clumsy but then everyone ends up helping him and coming to his rescue.

I liked writing my story and revising it. - Will

I loved making up my own character (The Rolly Burger) and creating a problem with supporting details, and a solution. - Jaxon

I liked doing the illustrations in my seed story about the Rich Corn, it was fun to make the pictures funny and learn the cartoon techniques. - Isaac

Have a wonderful weekend!
