Move-ember

November is movement month at LBS! We are encouraging students to be active throughout the winter with a movement challenge for move-ember :).

Students are encouraged to keep track of their movement minutes outside of school time from November 1-30. The class that earns the most movement minutes at the end of the month will earn a special reward! Please support your child in tracking their movement minutes either on the paper sent home on November 1, 2022. If you require additional tracking sheets please visit the Google Classroom.

Let’s encourage each other to be active and healthy! See the video for more information about our at school and at home challenges for the month.

Halloween Info

Halloween is Monday, October 31st. Students are invited to wear Halloween costumes if they would like. We remind all students that there is no gore, no masks and no weapons.  Students should come with their costumes on. Please ensure that costumes are comfortable to be worn throughout the day and will be safe and suitable for all daily activities such as gym, recess and learning time. Inflatable costumes are challenging for students to work in throughout the day.  In keeping with nutrition and health protocols, we ask for no additional treats or snacks to be sent in.

The parade is BACK!  We are so happy to welcome families back to the school for our Halloween parade. The gym will be set up for costume viewing. Our parade will start at 1:00 and students will wander through the gym to showcase their costumes. If you would like to join us, please come to the front door and join us in the gym for 1:00.  Please connect with your child’s teacher if you do not want your child participating in Halloween activities, such as the parade, during the day.

November 1st will be the Spirit Day. We will be having a pajama day. All staff and students are invited to wear their comfy pjs for the day.

 Hello Families,

We had an amazing walking field trip on Monday which kicked off our learning about poetry through descriptions and explorations with leaves. We did some journalling and some playing in the leaves and came back to the school to start working on our poems. We will share the good copies of this work with our school community through a hallway documentation board.

Here are some of the descriptions we came up with while on the field trip:

The leaf swished through the sky like a sword - AP

It swirled around like a lollipop - VJ

It swirled down like the shape of a candy cane - SL

It fell like a raindrop from the sky - L

The leaf fell like a floating wave - LB

The leaf swirled in the air like a cotton candy maker - IG

Gently drifted like a feather - SD

Drifting like the wind on a calm day - FO

Falling softly like a feather - SH

It flew through the sky like an airplane - BS

It swayed side to side to the ground like a swing - HC

It gracefully fell danced like a ballerina - MM

The leaf fell like a piece of light parchment paper - A

It swiftly fell to the ground like an airplane landing - RM

The leaf fluttered to the ground like a feather - BY

The leaf fell swiftly like paper - MP

It falls gracefully and swiftly like a hawk soaring through the vast open sky - AF

We are still learning about place value and have added in data collection. This week we were learning about rounding to the nearest ten. This was tricky for many students and might be worth a review over the weekend. We also looked at our individual and shared celebrations and traditions, this will connect to learning about India as Diwali is taking place on Monday. We collected data about what our class celebrates through surveying and tallying and then represented this data in bar graphs.

The art cards are turning out beautifully, I think you'll be very impressed with the finished products!

Please remember we go outside for our phys ed time daily so please ensure students are dressed for the weather. Also, as we have been learning about various plants we are accepting pumpkin donations to our classroom for an exploration on October 31. If you have a pumpkin of any size (uncut/unused) that you would like to provide for our classroom please send it with your child any day next week. We are also looking for duct tape for our classroom Wishtree (See the current construction below)! :) Thanks SO much for all of your help and support!

Hello Families,
This week we were able to spend some time testing the strength and stability of the tree bases we constructed last week. We tested strength by stacking a dictionary on the top and stability by putting the base through an imaginary earthquake. We have decided to use two of the bases stacked on-top of each other to create a mega base! Next week, we will continue with the tree construction. We are still seeking paper tubes (ie. toilet paper, wrapping paper, paper towel, etc) for our construction.

We continue to investigate place value and this week we looked at comparing numbers using symbols < > and =. Students were challenged with either looking at numbers up to 10,000 or up to 1,000,000. We are also working through a "place value passport" where we explore different representations of place value.

We were finally able to complete the news articles we have been writing about the Terry Fox Assembly and Run at LBS. We worked carefully to construct interesting hooks to grab the audiences attention. Next week, we will be looking into this further, as well as starting some poetry learning.
REMINDER: we are going on a walking field trip Monday afternoon!

 Wishing you a wonderful weekend!

 Hello Families,

We are officially one month into the school year and things continue to go well. This week we have been focusing specifically on place value and ordering of numbers, editing and revising written work, and continuing with our Wishtree novel study which connects to plant learning and building.

It is important to note that the new mathematics curriculum includes numbers up to 100,000 for grade 3 students, and place value with decimal numbers for grade 4 students. This is a jump in expectations in comparison to the former Program of Studies. We also learned Place Value Yahtzee this week, I'll upload the game sheets on here if you'd like to have your child teach you how to play over the weekend!

Thanks so much for all of the materials that have been sent in this week to support with the construction of our tree! We started the planning and construction of a base this week from the tips we learned from collaborating from Mrs. Cooper's class.

Here's a rough outline of some of the things we do weekly:

- Monday-Friday opening task which includes one brain warm up for numeracy and literacy

- Tuesday afternoons - outdoor learning with an Indigenous focus and emphasis on plant learning and journaling, please ensure your child is dressed for the weather on Tuesdays!

- Wednesday afternoons - "workshop" - teaching a new journalling technique and book exchange in our school learning commons

- Afternoons are usually dedicated to our science and social studies learning, while mornings are for math and reading/writing tasks

- Outdoor phys. ed. daily (weather permitting) with Ms. Kassam's class

- Outdoor 1km run daily every morning

Here are some photos from the week:

Happy Thanksgiving Weekend!
