Crazy Hair/Hat Day

Hello Families,

Students in Room 11 earned a reward last week for achieving our collaborative goal of 300 Class Dojo Points! Today, we decided our reward would be to have a crazy hair or hat day tomorrow!! All students are welcome to wear a crazy hairstyle, for example, mohawk, funny pony tail, etc. or add colors or an interesting hat or headband to their hair for the day! It's going to be so fun and the kids were SUPER EXCITED! Of course, participation is always optional.

Thanks for your help in this task!

February 25, 2019

Hello Families,

We were stuck with indoor recess all day today so kids will likely have some extra energy at home tonight! Hopefully we will get outside tomorrow! :)

Our first ever buddy spelling quiz last Friday was a great success. All students did really well with their first set of words! This week students have various word work on pink sheets to practice at home. These words include "no excuse spelling words", words that use Y as a vowel (where it makes the long I sound, for example: my, fly), or "oi" letter combination words. The quiz will be on Thursday this week as there is no school on Friday. Because word lists are going home and they are very small, if you have lost your red communication folder from the beginning of the year, please provide your own folder (any color and material is fine as long as it has a name on top) so the word lists and any other important information does not get lost on the way home.

We also had our first guest reader today! We introduced the bullseye target rubric for guest reader, with a focus on these criteria:
Sorry, this is a little tricky to read but the criteria areas are most important: Facial Expression, Voice, Body Language and Eye Contact!

After each guest reader, students have an opportunity to reflect on their own read aloud and self assess using the rubric. Classmates will also provide one another with feedback in the form off two stars and a wish. The two stars are things the reader did really well on, and the wish is an area for growth. Remember, this is important work to practice at home so students can be successful in all criteria! :)

Today, we also looked at and talked about money, and explored different ways to make $1.00. This informally targets skip counting and number flexibility while providing real world applications for then importance of understanding number values. Later in the week, we will move into word problems with money and/or skip counting, where students can choose their own difficulty level of mild, medium, or spicy and use symbols or materials to assist in solving the challenge questions! Feel free to explore some coins at home over the next few days to build on this understanding.

This week we also get to start writing our social stories about small problems that happen at school. We have been working to identify problems that fit into various themes, including injury problems, can't find problems, and made a mistake problems to name a few. Some examples of these problems could include I can't find a gluestick, or someone stepped on my foot, or my favorite work choice is all full!

In writing social stories, students will follow a set script of problem identification and effective strategies to cope with the small problem. Social stories are a highly effective tool in assisting students with understanding problems and strategies to cope with difficult emotions. They are frequently used in various settings, including for learners with complex needs. Our school Occupational Therapist (OT) consulted as an expert on this work and provided the script for students. The good copy work will be used as a resource for our whole school!

Upcoming Information:

Pink Shirt Day
February 27, 2019 is Pink Shirt Day! Wear a pink shirt to stand up against bullying!

Alien Inline
Alien In-Line, Alberta’s favorite school inline skating program, is coming to Lake Bonavista School March 4th – 8th and 11th – 15th.
We strictly require all students wear helmets at all times while on skates. Helmets are provided for all students however it is recommended that you bring in your own helmet. Students need to wear comfortably fitting clothes on skating days (not too tight and not to baggy). Skirts, dresses or shorts should be avoided.  All children need to have clean, dry full-sized socks.

Thank you to School Council for graciously funding this Active Living opportunity. An “Acknowledgement of Risk” form for this On-Site Activity is attached. Please read, sign and return the form by March 4, 2019. Please note that this form needs to be returned in order for your child to participate in the In-line skating program.
Take care,

Valentines Math Art

Hello!

I got these put up in the classroom today and wanted to share them with everyone. This is the work we did last week. Each student thought of a different way to make and represent 10. They turned out really cute and will serve as a helpful reminder when we are making those friendly numbers as a math strategy!

Enjoy your evening, please remember to pack pita supplies for tomorrow :).

Hello Families,

I hope everyone enjoyed Family Day and was able to spend some time together! This week we are starting a new word work program. For the grade 2's, it will be familiar from last year with some modifications. Each week, students will be given a new word list, one copy will be sent home and the other will stay here at school for daily practice. These words are individually designed for each student based on words they are currently spelling incorrectly in their writing work, or based on frequently used words, or word groups (ie. mug, bug, hug, etc.).

Each Friday (or the last school day of the week) students will quiz each other on their words. The word work program encourages mastery, so if they make an error on one or more of the weekly words, those words will stay on their list for the following week. If they spell the words correctly on their quiz, they will get new words for the following week. Word lists range from 4 to 6 words.  If you have time to practice these words at home before the Friday quiz it would be helpful in building success and confidence! Some super fun ways to practice could include:
-  building the words with play dough, lego, pipe cleaners, etc.
- writing them in special markers
- spelling the letters with your bodies
- finger painting the words
- tracing the letters on a partners back to try and figure out the words
- spelling with scrabble tiles or other letters you may have at home

In addition, next week we are beginning our guest reader program! Each day, a different student will have the opportunity to read a book to his/her classmates! Great book choices include a favorite book from home, a "just right" home reading book, or a book from our school library. Students could also choose to read their book from their Nickle Big Buddy if it is a just right choice they want to share with classmates. If they are choosing this book I will send it home for practice. Please practice the text at home prior to your child's reading day to ensure fluency, volume and expression!

Here is the schedule, the first reader will be on Monday, February 25th.

On Thursday, February 21 we have a Byblos Bakery session to teach us about healthy eating and how to prepare snacks independently. Byblos will be providing each student with a pita, and they can bring toppings from home to fill their pita bread. Great toppings could be lettuce, tomato, cucumbers, spreads (nut free), cheese, meats, etc. Each student only needs to bring enough for their own pita bread, and the pita will be eaten as snack on that day, so please send lunch, and additional snacks if necessary on Thursday.

Hello Families,

Despite the extremely cold temperatures, things are going great in our classroom. Last week, Mrs. Jemmott was able to continue a lot of the work we have been doing with numbers and students were working with venn diagrams to classify numbers using vocabulary such as even, odd, greater than and less than.

Today we took some time to build on foundational understandings of even and odd, as these seem to be tricky ideas when we work into two digit numbers. We created hundreds charts as a tool to identify the pattern in even and odd, and worked with materials to build and deconstruct numbers to break them into even or near even groupings to determine "Even Steven" or "Odd Todd". Here's the 100's chart we did together, ask your child some questions about even and odd numbers and "how do you know its even/odd?" to see their understanding!

Here's our color coded chart, blue for odd numbers and red for even.

Additionally, we have our awesome, custom made books from our big buddies at Nickle school! To thank them for all of their hard work we wrote rough and good copy cards for them that will be sent over to them. We are doing some work with the books at school and soon they will be sent home as they are yours to keep.

Our good copy letters are all ready to be sent off to our pen pals at Fuji Kindergarten, Tokyo, Japan as well. This week we will write a whole class letter to compare and contrast our lives to what we have already learned about life in Japan and then our letters will be ready for mailing! In learning about Japan we have had so many extraordinary experiences, for example, we got to make and taste mochi (a traditional Japanese rice treat), use chopsticks, learn about the landforms, and practice origami, all while keeping track of our learning in our Japan scrapbooks. Each student learned the Japanese art of origami and folded their own carpe fish, all of which are currently hanging from the roof in our classroom, they look really cute!

Tomorrow we finish up our Design Thinking STEM challenge where we are designing a device to retrieve keys from a sewer to help our friend Marta (a fictional text character). Students have worked hard about reiterating their design and considering what they already know about magnets to guide their work.

Our gymnastics unit is now over, so please feel free to have more flexibility in the dress code again. Additionally, if you have not already done so please return your white report card envelope to school (leave the report at home) with a signature as they are used for the June report cards as well.

Also a reminder that all Scholastic orders are due on Wednesday, Feb. 13 and there is a free book offer this month, see my previous Scholastic post for details.

Take care!

LBS Volunteers Needed

Our School Spirit! Family Dance is coming up quickly and we’re still in need of a lot of volunteers. Each volunteer opportunity is only half an hour, so you can slip away and have fun with other parents at various stations!

Not able to volunteer time that night? We have another way you can contribute.

We’re looking for bakers (or purchasers) to provide cakes, cupcakes or other baked goods as prizes for our very popular Cake Walk event running at the dance. Donating 12 cupcakes? Put six each in two containers and sign up for two baked goods. Awesome!! *The baked items can be dropped off at the front entrance of the school on Wednesday morning or afternoon.

*Thank you for bringing a cake or baked item! Please be aware that the dish your cake is sent to us on will not be returned to you.

Please ensure all baked items are either nut free or labelled as containing nuts or as Gluten Free, etc.

If you have any further questions, please contact Krista at LBSvolunteercoordinator@gmail.com
Thank you for your support everyone and see you on Wednesday night!
