February 19, 2019

Hello Families,

I hope everyone enjoyed Family Day and was able to spend some time together! This week we are starting a new word work program. For the grade 2's, it will be familiar from last year with some modifications. Each week, students will be given a new word list, one copy will be sent home and the other will stay here at school for daily practice. These words are individually designed for each student based on words they are currently spelling incorrectly in their writing work, or based on frequently used words, or word groups (ie. mug, bug, hug, etc.).

Each Friday (or the last school day of the week) students will quiz each other on their words. The word work program encourages mastery, so if they make an error on one or more of the weekly words, those words will stay on their list for the following week. If they spell the words correctly on their quiz, they will get new words for the following week. Word lists range from 4 to 6 words.  If you have time to practice these words at home before the Friday quiz it would be helpful in building success and confidence! Some super fun ways to practice could include:
-  building the words with play dough, lego, pipe cleaners, etc.
- writing them in special markers
- spelling the letters with your bodies
- finger painting the words
- tracing the letters on a partners back to try and figure out the words
- spelling with scrabble tiles or other letters you may have at home

In addition, next week we are beginning our guest reader program! Each day, a different student will have the opportunity to read a book to his/her classmates! Great book choices include a favorite book from home, a "just right" home reading book, or a book from our school library. Students could also choose to read their book from their Nickle Big Buddy if it is a just right choice they want to share with classmates. If they are choosing this book I will send it home for practice. Please practice the text at home prior to your child's reading day to ensure fluency, volume and expression!

Here is the schedule, the first reader will be on Monday, February 25th.

On Thursday, February 21 we have a Byblos Bakery session to teach us about healthy eating and how to prepare snacks independently. Byblos will be providing each student with a pita, and they can bring toppings from home to fill their pita bread. Great toppings could be lettuce, tomato, cucumbers, spreads (nut free), cheese, meats, etc. Each student only needs to bring enough for their own pita bread, and the pita will be eaten as snack on that day, so please send lunch, and additional snacks if necessary on Thursday.
