Hello Families,

We are looking forward to a new week! Today we started looking at sorting Woozles!! Here are the Woozles:

Woozles are fun because there are so many different ways we can sort them! We can sort them by one or more attributes. Today we added color to them, so we can first sort them by attribute color! After that, the options are endless (smooth or furry, one or two "eyes", etc.).

We completed a writing task this morning about "On the weekend.." or free writing about Halloween. We also introduced rubrics into our writing, so students could self-assess their work. We categorized our work in 4 ways: 1 - not yet; 2 - getting better; 3 - nice work; and 4 - WOW work! Students were able to look at the exemplars and determine where they thought their work would fall, they did a good job determining where their work was strong, and areas for improvement.

A reminder that we are celebrating Halloween on Wednesday afternoon with a parade, and in class celebration. Students are invited to wear their costumes in the afternoon only. Please see my previous blog post regarding costume and celebration guidelines.  If you would like to join us for the parade it begins at 1:00pm, and parents can come through the front door and into the gymnasium to see all of the costumes!

Additionally, on Thursday, November 1, we are having a literacy day! Students will likely be exhausted from the evening before, so this day will be an opportunity for a relaxing time to be spent in activities such as reading, writing, playing games, and sharing orally with other students. Each of our 4 grade 1/2 classes that share the quad will offer something different and students will have a chance to rotate through different literacy centers. If you have an appropriate board or card game that your child would like to share and teach to friends please send it (with your name) on Thursday!

Hope everyone enjoyed the weekend!

Hi Families,

Tomorrow is a Professional Development Day (PD Day) for teachers.
No school for students. See you Monday!

Our assembly today was a tremendous success!! Students have worked so hard on learning their various roles to share their understanding!! Thank you to all families who were able to come and be in the audience for our assembly today.

The learning shared in our assembly was supported by the MindUP! curriculum, developed by the Hawn Foundation and Scholastic.

MindUP is for classrooms, teachers and home! https://mindup.org/

MindUP is grounded in neuroscience, activated by mindful awareness, inspired by positive psychology and a catalyst for social-emotional learning. We used complementary resources to support different lessons:

We developed our vocabulary for different feeling through modeling, skits and personal experiences.
Being able to accurately label our feelings empowers students with self-regulation.
Understanding abstract concepts like anxiety was supported through
beautiful picture books like "Hey, Warrior" by Karen Young

We will continue to use the MindUp! curriculum throughout the year to support further development of safe expression of feelings, self-awareness and self-regulation, as well as perspective taking.

Interestingly enough, Telus Spark will be offering a new youth science program aimed at de-stigmatizing mental health, and managing stress: https://www.msn.com/en-ca/health/wellness/new-youth-science-program-at-telus-spark-aims-to-destigmatize-mental-health/ar-BBOSLRc

Have a wonderful weekend everyone!

Hello Everyone,

We had a fabulous day at Fort Calgary yesterday!! I was SO incredibly proud of all of the students, they were respectful, helpful and shared lots of valuable information! It was a great kick off to our learning about community! Here are student reflections about what we learned or enjoyed:

Fort Calgary Reflections

I learned…
  • ·      The first nations people use the whole buffalo as their own store, they (in the past) get everything they need from the buffalo
  • ·      At Fort Calgary I learned about the past, F.N. didn’t have houses they had tipis
  • ·      I liked learning about the First Nations and Settler people, I liked building the house and learning about community
  • ·      I learned the difference between a building material and a tool – a building material is something used for building (ex. Wood, bricks, sandstone). A tool is something that helps you build (ex. Wrench, hammer, axe)
  • ·      I learned that the first nations people used the buffalo Hyde for their tipis
  • ·      I learned the tipis need to be portable so they can move to find the buffalo

I enjoyed…
  • ·      I enjoyed looking at the models of what Calgary used to look like over 100 years ago
  • ·      I enjoyed putting the costumes on, I was a settler woman
  • ·      Putting on the costumes, looking at the models, and building the settlers house
  • ·      I enjoyed looking at the models, building the house, and seeing the jail cell
  • ·      I was wearing a North West Mountain Police costume and building the settler house
  • ·      I enjoyed being a police and building the wood house, they used wood logs with a sod roof (made of grass, roots, and dirt)
  • ·      I enjoyed making the map – John A. McDonald was the first Prime Minister of Canada, he built the train so people could trade goods with each other and people!
  • ·      I enjoyed touring the museum, I liked that we saw a train and we got to walk over real train tracks
  • ·      I liked seeing the horse at fort Calgary
  • ·      I liked dressing up like the olden days and looking inside the model of the settlers house
  • ·      I liked the costumes and building the house with logs
  • ·      I enjoyed seeing the artifacts, especially the First Nations doll

Here are some photos from the day:

Hope you enjoy! An extra thanks for our amazing parent volunteers from yesterday as well! :)

Hello!

We have had another busy and quick week! On Tuesday we had a whole school assembly where Kananaskis in the Classroom gave us a presentation about the difference between moth and butterfly species, and their life cycles.  Kananaskis in the Classroom always does a fantastic job of creating engaging and educational presentations with lots of laughs. After the assembly we had the presenter also provide our class with some additional lessons and fun learning games.

Wednesday was another busy day with school photos. Everyone came looking their best, and it was an exciting day! We also worked on the number 10, and talked about all of the different ways 10 can be made by using a variety of materials such as the addition strip board, and unifix cubes. We also shared and wrote about Thanksgiving or our weekend events.

We have also been working on our celebration of learning assembly with Ms. Thomas's class. Yesterday, we talked about and expressed different emotions that our amygdala produces. We also have been creating scripts and assigning assembly roles so students have enough time to practice. We have been working on some artwork and writing to compliment our assembly theme of learning about the brain. Through an amazing book Hey Warrior by Karen Young, we got the idea to give our Amygdala's, Prefrontal Cortex's, and Hippocampus's different avatars, as they each have a different role in the production and regulation of emotions. We used crayon and water cooler paints to create a bunch of interesting and cute characters as representations of the different areas of the brain. We also gave them names! Here are some photos:

Have a great weekend everyone!

Jacket Racket

Dear Parents,

Rooms 14 and 17 are leading a collection of winter clothing to be distributed to Calgarians in need. The clothing will be given to an organization called Jacket Racket. We will collect as much winter clothing (Jackets, Mittens, Snowpants, etc) as we can. To do this, we are asking that all students at LBS bring in any winter clothing they are willing to donate over the next month. It is important that the items are in good, clean condition.

For more information about Jacket Racket, please visit the website using this link: here.

Halloween Costumes

Hello Families,

The excitement around Halloween is in the air! Here are some things to keep in mind when planning a costume:

- Costumes are only worn in the afternoon on Wednesday, October 31, 2018. Children will have an opportunity to change at lunch, please make sure they are able to put their costumes on independently. In addition we request the costumes are school appropriate and do not have any face masks, weapons, blood, gore, etc.

- Our school-wide Halloween Parade happens in the afternoon, families welcome to come watch.

- Morning kindergarten students will do a mini-parade in the morning.

- We will celebrate in our classroom by having a small Halloween celebration (afternoon only) where students can play games with one another. If you'd like to pack an extra snack for that day or a small, easy to eat, healthy treat for the class to enjoy feel free!

Let me know if you have any questions.

Take care!

Hello Families,

We have been having SNOW much fun the past few days! :)

Yesterday, we took advantage of the thick beautiful snow and went out snowshoeing. The grade 5/6's helped us put our shoes on. It was an amazing experience!

Today, we used a snowman as an inquiry method for data collection! We worked together to build a snowman, and then brought him into our classroom. We discussed different ways we could measure his height, and named him Lily Jakob Junior.  We decided that the best way to measure him would be to use unifix cubes (nonstandard measurement) and rulers (standard measurement). We made predictions about his height, looking at the heights of one, two, and 10 cubes as a frame of reference. On first measurement he was 45 cubes tall. We made predictions for how his height would change after recess.

After recess he took a little tumble and his head fell off. He measured in at 31.5 cubes tall after the fall, or 1 foot 8 inches. Here are some photos:

Hope you enjoy the photos! Have a lovely evening!

Terry Fox Update

Congratuations Lake Bonavista School for an amazing Terry Fox Run this year!!

You raised $240! In total as a school, we ran 1441 laps around our field. Each lap was 0.56 kms which is equal to 807 km. Did you know that Terry Fox ran 5 times as far as we did from St. John’s, Newfoundland to Thunder Bay, Ontario. Can you calculate how far he ran? Great job to all! An update will come soon as to how we will celebrate our challenge success with Mrs. Jones and Mrs. Rasmussen.
