December 22, 2022

 Hello Families,
We have had a great last few weeks despite the cold weather! I hope you enjoyed the winter concert last week, everyone did a wonderful job.

Also thank you so much for to all of the families for your generosity and kind words this Christmas season! I will really miss coming to work everyday and working with all of the wonderful students in room 2. I look forward to our return to school in 2023.

The students worked really hard on their Christmas ornaments. Planning their design, creating an order form, calculating the cost and then creating their ornament. We hope you enjoy them as much as I did, each one was as unique as each child!

We have officially finished the read aloud Wishtree. Each child choose to summarize and retell the story either by creating a new cover and back summary or a comic strip. They turned out great!

A group of students worked really hard on writing this script and producing this performance, here's the link if you'd like to watch it at home. We tried to watch it today in class but were having volume issues: https://youtu.be/sMDUYAqZkQI

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays everyone! Wishing you all the best in the new year!

Take care,
Ms. Brown

Friendly Reminder:

School starts back on Monday, January 9th :) we will be having outdoor gym time this day.

 Hello Families,

It was a great week at exploring the characters in Wishtree and learning various multiplication strategies! Our class pet was also revealed... in the new year we are getting a VAMPIRE CRAB!

We used our planning from last week to write 2 sentences about each of the main Wishtree characters (Bongo, Red, Stephen, and Samar) using only their character traits. Then, we went through feedback cycles to improve the quality of language and descriptions. We used the final drafts of this work to make fortune tellers with a description of the characters inside. Students can now play against one another to see if they can guess the character based on the description!

We spent the entire week working on developing and improving multiplication strategies through the use of arrays, skip counting and repeated addition. We then applied this understanding through practice questions and word problems and learned the more advanced version of multiplication squares. To assess students understanding, today we completed a mini multiplication check in.

The Move-ember Movement Minutes Challenge is officially over and we are happy to announce we finished in second place! Due to the efforts of room 2, we have decided to celebrate our silver medal finish with a fun filled active day in the final week of school before winter break. See the graph below for a breakdown of the minutes earned at LBS!

In preparation for the arrival of our Vampire Crab class pet, we have started to learn about the lifecycle, diet, and needs of the crab to best support it in the new classroom environment. Students have become savvy researchers accessing multiple online sources to synthesize and cross-reference information.

Please note, the gym will be unavailable for the next two weeks, thus, we will be going outside daily for our Physical Education time (weather permitting). Please ensure students come dressed for an extended period of time spent outdoors each day.

Thanks for all of your support with the Mitten Tree donations! This is a beautiful representation of active citizenship, a key component of Montessori education, within our school community!

Additionally, I shared some mini videos of the Immersive Nutcracker that I went to on the weekend at the BMO centre, many student's expressed interest in attending so I said I would link it on the blog (it was amazing): https://www.immersive-nutcracker.com/calgary/

I look forward to seeing you at the concert next Thursday!

Take care,

Ms. Brown

 Hello Families,

Wishing you all well as we enter the final month of the year, wow! Thank you so much to everyone that took the time to connect and discuss student learning last week during our November conference time. It was wonderful to have families back in the school again and meet face to face.

Our learning has been incredible this week! Student's have been extremely successful in our work looking at computation with money (grade 3's) and decimal numbers to the hundredth (grade 4's). Students are highly motivated as they know that as we move through this mathematical work our end goal is to be designing and constructing our own ornaments to take home for the holidays! This will be our gift from teacher to student this year :). Next week we will be looking at multiplication strategies and the following week (Dec. 12 to Dec. 16) we will be working on our ornament task design and problem solving.

We have also been looking closely at the elements of stories and applying summarizing skills as well as identifying physical traits and character traits. This has been connected to the short story The Paperbag Princess and our read-aloud Wishtree. Check out the pictures....

Here are some math games we have learned in school that you can play at home:
